A interesting question came upon me when I was talking to my friend a few days ago: Is there a link between depression and creativity?
Well, I certainly feel like as I get happier, I am losing all the content ideas I had when I was depressed and locked up in my room. I believe that there is a connection between the two to some extent. Maybe we become creative because we’re deeply unhappy and we need to see a better world than the one we’re forced to live in. Maybe our narratives break down and we have to become creative enough to forge new ones. Maybe we can’t stand the possibility of following the prescribed path that we’d be shuffled down if we focused in like we were told to.
To be completely honest, I don’t know why we behave this certain way. Yet, it is certain that creativity fills up the void when we are struggling. To this end, creativity is a dose of drug that cures depression, or any other illness that we are dealing with.
While it is true that amazing artists such as Van Gogh and Virginia Woolf did crazy deeds, good works can also be done on a clear mind. As creativity slowly heals you, try to embrace a much healthier pursuit -- happiness -- and create better work in a positive way.
